A good way to do that is to take up a mercenary contract with the faction you like instead of becoming a lord directly. As far as i can tell, The game thinks merc contracts are the same as joining that faction as a lord. A bug i seriously hope gets fixed soon as it really ruins allot of the game play, having people hate you just because you left them when they ran out of wars to fight.
First - In the early game, stay the fuck away from troops who are not brigands and their variations if you don't have any companions. They are either mounted and will fuck you up or they have ranged weapons and they will 2 shot you easy. So focus on fighting parties of brigands, usually near Laria or Sarleon.
Missed this in my perk change thread, but the 275 Charm perk 'Immortal Charm' is now seriously good; Gives 1 influence per day for every skill point over 200. So with 7 att / 5 focus, the minimum to hit it and reach cap of 288, that is +88 influence, daily. Every 5 skills after 250 gives you +1 influence point per day.
afaik, the kingdom goes up to a vote among it's own lords, not following any sort of inheritance law. Its how I've unwittingly become king of Vlandia several times now. Probably super easy to do though to get people's votes. Donate prisoner troops and lords in other people's castles and you get their likes and favors.
So right here you have a few more reasons: because they think its fun; because they want to RP as a mercenary; because they dont want to take orders from a king; because they dont want to be tied down by a faction; and so on. mercenaries is a decent paid job. Just sell your loot or gather influence (extra pay).
